Afrikoa
Made of Africa “Gone are the days when Paris was the place to find the finest fashion in the world. Gone are the days when Switzerland is the only maker of the finest chocolate.” – Laduma Ngxokolo, Fashion Designer and founder of MaXhosa Africa. Afrikoa believes in growing the art of chocolate-making within Africa, using the rich resources we have and supporting farmers and their local communities. They’ve made a promise that their chocolate will always be Made of Africa using cocoa beans that have never left the continent. Direct Trade Direct Trade connects cocoa farmers with chocolate makers, without any middlemen, in a way that they become dependent on each other´s success, ethics, and professionalism. He didn’t just want to live life, he wanted to preserve the beauty he grew up with, in the hope that future generations would also have the opportunity to experience our beautiful and diverse country. However, with our landfills piling up with plastic, he pondered where to start. After completing his studies at the University of Stellenbosch, Dan set out to make a difference, a change. Growing Paper
It may be odd for kindness to lie at the heart of a business, but this much is true of Growing Paper, a proudly South African company that produces 100% hand-made, recycled, plantable and biodegradable paper products that grow into beautiful living herbs, vegetables or flowers when planted. When founder Roxanne Schumann started Growing Paper on her family farm at the foot of the Paardeberg with the help of school friend Nileta Knoetzen in 2010, their initial aim was to create a sustainable product that would contribute to an upcycling culture and bring a little beauty into the world. The idea for their recycled seeded paper products came about in 2009 when thinking about all the lovely stationery going to waste at a wedding. The pair developed the idea, bought some second-hand paper-making equipment and set to work. Little did they know that Growing Paper would become a source of permanent employment for 30+ individuals, largely from the local community, and provide paid upskilling opportunities for countless more who would be equipped to pursue future job leads. Before long they were creating beautiful greeting cards and gift tags using post-consumer wastepaper, embedding it with seeds that grow into flowers, herbs or…

Peel’s Honey
Peel’s is South Africa’s oldest honey brand – they only sell 100% pure honey produced by local beekeepers and proudly South African bees. Their honeys are non-irradiated to ensure that the honey retains all its natural benefits and is unadulterated – so it’s all real honey! The Peel’s story began in 1924 in the Midlands with Jack Peel who operated a little apiary as a hobby. He started-off by selling small quantities of his honey to friends and neighbours and, as demand increased from far and wide, so did the number of his beehives. During 1956, Jack met a local beekeeper – John Smith. Their shared love of all things bees made for a good partnership and the two began working together as beekeepers. Jack passed away in 1959 and John continued to build the Peel’s legacy together with his wife, Faye. The Smiths would routinely park their car next to the national road with the boot open and sell passers-by their honey products. In short time, the Smiths decided to build a little wooden kiosk to replace their car boot not far from the road and loyal customers continued to visit their little wooden kiosk to find their favourite…
Satori Notebook Co
It began when the founders were browsing through a popular stationery store. That moment was the culmination of many years of pondering. Being stationery fiends, they naturally gravitated towards the notebooks. As they were browsing they felt less and less inspired. They started talking and before long realised where their mutual feelings came from: Affordable products are usually badly made, ugly, and frustrating to use. They also don’t speak anything of the human that made the product or the person that ends up using it. They lack meaning or any kind of story. They seldom satisfy the basic human needs for emotional connection and self-expression. This leaves the frugal and the non-wealthy with few options. Most of what we see around us is mass-manufactured in an anonymous factory on some distant continent by some faceless corporation. This means that the money we spend on these products vanishes off-shore and contributes to someone else’s community. Not local. Not lekker. Segueing into the final point: the environment, our home. Shipping products across the globe accounts for unspeakable damage to the world we share. Not to mention the environmentally and socially destructive production processes. Sad story. Gloom. Heads hanging, they began to ask themselves:…
Simply Bee
The creators and owners of Simply Bee, Helena and Pierre van der Westhuizen, make it their mission to not only cultivate awareness of the benefits of using natural beeswax products but to also aid in bee conservation. Simply Bee’s products offer all natural handmade products, free from harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances and parabens. Making it safe and environmentally friendly. Being allergic to most cosmetics with synthetic ingredients and harsh preservatives, Helena has done much research, trials and studying of the bees and their products. This led to the beginning of Simply Bee, a range of natural, organic products for both the body and the home. Starting off with five products, they now offer 120 products including body lotions, hand cream, foot balm, ointments, shampoo, soaps, facial skin products and polishes. They strive to support our local suppliers, so their carrier and essential oil ingredients are bought from reputable local companies. Simply Bee is very fortunate to have their beehives in Fynbos rich areas around Hopefield, 140 km North of Cape Town, where…

The article trumpeted the longer burning qualities and ‘green’ advantages of soy candles. Soy wax is a by-product of soybean agriculture and is completely natural without any synthetic additives or petroleum materials such as paraffin wax. This his attention because his father and wife, Rob and Ann, owned and ran a candle manufacturing company on the east coast of the USA. Interested in extending their already extensive range of candles, Rob began extensive research into the new and emerging soy candle industry in the USA. The couple visited many soybean suppliers in search for one produced exceptional quality oil, with integrity. Through months of sampling, testing and experimentation, they discovered a significant discrepancy in the qualities…

Sunbird Rooibos
Sunbird was founded in 2016 by Anton who grew up on a wine grape farm outside of Cape Town, South Africa. This afforded him the opportunity to learn about birds and to be amongst the mountains and oceans of the Cape – two of the most fascinating and biodiverse places in the world. While living in Nepal with his Finnish wife Laura, Anton trekked among the inspirational Himalayas and discovered what fine tea can be. On returning home, he had a newfound passion for Rooibos, a drink that had been as a staple since a baby. This dual love for fine flavours and the natural world is the foundation of Sunbird Rooibos. Sunbird is the first to release a range of Single-Origin Rooibos tea. They are the only company in the world to offer organically grown Rooibos tea from single-origin sources. This offering is possible through creating value close to the source of their growers, and in turn, they are able create a better South Africa for its people and natural environment. Without blending or adding flavourings, these teas represent our suppliers’ unique growing conditions, made distinct by climate, soil and biodiversity. They have followed this success with a range…
