The Journey

Almost two decades ago, whilst living in the depths of the jungles in Hawaii, Colin came across an article describing soybean oil candles. The article trumpeted the longer burning qualities and ‘green’ advantages of soy candles. Soy wax is a by-product of soybean agriculture and is completely natural without any synthetic additives or petroleum materials such as paraffin wax. This his attention because his father and wife, Rob and Ann, owned and ran a candle manufacturing company on the east coast of the USA. Interested in extending their already extensive range of candles, Rob began extensive research into the new and emerging soy candle industry in the USA. The couple visited many soybean suppliers in search for one produced exceptional quality oil, with integrity. Through months of sampling, testing and experimentation, they discovered a significant discrepancy in the qualities of the many samples of soybean oil collected. Often the soybean oil was from a GM crop, and some suppliers would blend the soy with other ‘additives’, including paraffin wax, to influence the burn. Rob and Ann eventually found a supplier that met their requirements. They continued test the best samples they found with various wicks and containers, until they were finally satisfied that they had created the highest quality product that burned beautifully. Their company boomed amid the launch of their soy candles and their factory could barely keep up with demand! But there was a unique quality to their soy candles that set them apart from others. Soybean oil has a naturally high content of Vitamin E and Lecithin which could be applied to a person's skin without leaving an oily or waxy residue. Through a collaboration with their supplier, they were able to create a soy candle that burned beautifully, felt warm, smooth, and was easily absorbed when applied to the skin. Rob began to receive letters from satisfied customers explaining how their soy candles had helped them treat all kinds of skin ailments by applying the melted soy oil. Upon returning to South Africa, Colin teamed up with his partner Nicole, and they decided to start a soy candle manufacturing company in South Africa in 2007. Both share a passion for environmental concerns and an ethical approach to business, values they live through their business. From very humble beginnings operating from a small room at the back of their home, they continue to grow, and now employ 7 permanent staff. They access the best quality raw soy materials, and are committed to consistently craft and deliver a SoyLites product influenced by their African roots. All packaging materials, glass and metal containers, essential oils and other related extras are locally sourced where possible. They love the abundance of choice when it comes to quality African botanical oils, and are constantly experimenting with ideas.
